November 16th, 2018 by Elizabeth Radabaugh
One dance genre that is mesmerizing to any audience is belly-dancing. Our #DancerDose this week has mastered this art. Amar Gamal is a world-renowned belly dancer and proud Cuban immigrant with an inspiring story to tell.
Childhood in Miami
Gamal was born in Havana, Cuba, and soon immigrated to the US as a child. She started belly-dancing when she was 13 years-old at Miami’s Mideastern Dance Exchange under the instruction of former Miss America of the Belly-dance (1995), Tamalyn Dallal. Gamal fell in love with dancing and decided to audition for the notable New World School of the Arts High School in Miami, Fl. She was the first and only student that was accepted into the dance program after auditioning with belly-dance. There she enhanced her dance training to a well-rounded one in Ballet, Jazz, Modern/Contemporary, Tap and Afro-Cuban.
Extensive Belly-dance Credit
Following the footsteps of her instructor Dallal, Gamal is a double crown winner of Ms. America of the Belly-dance. Additionally, she has won the honor of Ms. World of the Belly-dance. Gamal has earned many other notable recognitions through her extensive experience in Belly-dance. She is a certified Zumba Instructor as well as having a Bachelor of Science Degree and Associates Degree in Psychology.
The AG Belly-dance Method + Bellyqueen
“Gamal’s belly-dance style is an Egyptian fusion that includes flavors of Latin, Jazz, Modern, and Ballet, while still preserving the traditional and classical Egyptian feel.” Her technique, The AG Belly-dance Method, focuses on body alignment and posture, muscle and skeletal control, body awareness, as well as knowledge on the musicality, rhythm, and origins of the dance. She crafts her classes so her students are encouraged and feel comfortable to try new things and challenge themselves. She helps them to find their own unique and individual style. In 1998, Gamal and her dance partners Kaeshi Chai and Jenna co-founded Bellyqueen, a New York based belly-dance company. Belly-queen has toured all over the world including the US, Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, and Asia from 2006-2009, spreading the art of Belly-dancing one shimmy at a time.
Gamal is currently based in Massachusetts where she holds frequent workshops. Head on to her website to find out what else she’s up to!
