May 20th, 2019 by Elizabeth Radabaugh
This Bollywood film star is one of the highest-paid actors in India, but is better known for his incredible dance moves and strength while being faced with adversity. Performing on stage, film, and television, Hrithik Roshan has continued to pave the way for others who have been forced to face hardships on their way to fame.
Bred To Be A Superstar
Born on January 10th, 1974 to a family with a prominent presence in Bollywood, Roshan was bred to become a superstar. A film director father and a mother with a background in producing and directing, Roshan was immediately attracted to the arts and wished to pursue acting. His passion for the arts was prohibited from being pursued from the start as he was isolated as a child. Born with an extra thumb on his right hand and a stammering problem, many of his peers rejected him. He had to find a different outlet to express himself to the world. After watching many films with his father and recognizing his knack for creating rhythmic movements as a means of projecting himself, Roshan’s grandfather approached him with his first on-screen opportunity to pursue his drive for the arts.
Being paid a small sum of money by his grandfather, Roshan faced his fear of rejection and swallowed his humility as he danced in a song enacted by Jeetendra. Following his first on-screen performance, Roshan was determined to continue working through his differences and difficulties to continue creating small work for his father and grandfather. He danced in two more productions with his family before going on to his first speaking role at age 12. At this time, he decided to pursue both acting and dancing full-time to seek out further success.
His Big Break
In the early 2000s, Roshan made his big break as he starred in his father’s romantic drama, Kaho Naa…Pyar Hai. To prepare for the role, Roshan took acting and dancing lessons with his co-star to ensure he would be at peak performance. His easy and fluid style of dance showcased in the film led him to be internationally recognized as a strong figure in the arts world as his performance was critically acclaimed. For the role, Roshan received Best Male Debut and Best Actor Awards at the annual Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, and Zee Cine Awards. This film went on to establish Roshan as a prominent figure in Bollywood and he quickly became an overnight success in the world of Indian entertainment.
Following his success, Roshan went on to star in a number of other romantic films throughout the next 10 years that would emphasize his talent for acting while also representing himself as a large figure in the dance community. Roshan’s career heightened after being cast in Kites in 2010. The film was produced by his father and showed off his ability to captivate audiences with his emotional portrayal of a green-card scammer. The film opened on a record-breaking 3000 screens and became the first Bollywood film to break into the North American top 10.
Outside of his success on the screen, Roshan performed on stage on his Heartthrobs: Live In Concerttour that achieved success in both the United States and Canada. In 2011, he was showcased as a judge alongside Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant for the dance competition reality show, Just Dance. In his work on the show and during philanthropic events, Roshan has vocalized his childhood stammer and physical deformity as a means of reassuring others faced with similar problems that no disability can prohibit someone from achieving success. Along with this, he donates roughly $10,000 for charity every month and strongly believes that people should publicize their philanthropic work to set an example for others.
Roshan is recognized as being one of the most talented Indian actors and performers of his generation due to his devotion to his work and his ability to commit to any role or performance no matter how big or how small. Roshan is among one of Bollywood’s highest-paid performers and was named one of India’s most high-profile celebrities. Despite his status, Roshan remains humbly tied to his roots and remains centered on his passions as he continues to promote work that serves a purpose that is meaningful to him and can make a global impact to others who are in the same shoes he was once in.
