#DanceCharityOfTheWeek: The Time Is Right For Dancing In The Street

May 29th, 2018 by Richie Kormos

Dance Charity Dance Competition“Calling out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat? Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the street…We’re dancing in New York City. All we need is music!” Martha and the Vandella’s sang these lyrics in their 1964 hit song, Dancing In The Street. A few things have changed since 1964. But the impulse to spread joy around the world is a concept that will never grow old.

This week’s #DanceCharityOfTheWeek is Dancing In The Streets, a non-profit organization that has been in existence since 1984. It was founded in the South Bronx by Elise Bernhard with the objective to “develop movement-based projects through long term initiatives, integrate rigorous inquiry, artistic exploration, deep community engagement, and nurture urban artists”  (http://www.dancinginthestreets.org/mission–history).

Over the years, Dancing In The Streets has presented and produced over 500 free public performances by 300+ artists. They focus in three main areas. These areas include: Resident Artists, The Incubator and It’s Showtime NYC! They nurture artists within the community and help them build bridges across cultures. As well as generational gaps, and communities. The Incubator is created to support new artists in social practice and dance. It’s Showtime NYC! gives a platform to advocate the art form of Hip Hop culture in the New York City area.

Through your generous giving, Dancing In The Streets can continue to “produce FREE adventurous public performances in unexpected places. As well as integrate artistic innovation with community engagement. And build bridges across generations, communities, and culture”. There are two ways you make a donation. The first way is by donating online at NYCharities.org or by mailing a check made out to: Dancing In The Streets, and send it to: 555 Bergen Avenue, 3rd Floor Bronx, NY 10455.
