Find Your Confidence When Dancing

Everyone struggles with confidence issues at some point in their life. Even some of the most incredible dancers out there don’t have a level of confidence that matches their incredible skills! An extra dose of confidence can give your performance an extra kick, but how do you get to that point if you have struggles believing in yourself? The good news is, there is always a way to raise your confidence and know your worth. Eventually, you can see yourself as the incredible dancer that you are!
You’re Not Alone
If you’re feeling down on your dance ability, or extra nervous before a performance, remember that almost every dancer has felt the same way. Stage fright is no stranger to anyone, and it’s natural to feel nervous! Many of the most successful dancers out there still feel that familiar tingle of stage fright before they strut onto the stage. No one feels incredible all of the time, but there’s always a way to push through. Remember that you are not alone in any feelings of doubt you may have, and the struggle can become easier.
Redirect Your Attention
Many feelings of incompetence as a performer can come from a fear of what others will think of you as a dancer. It’s easy to say: “just don’t pay attention to anyone else,” but it’s not an easy thing to do. It can be helpful to think of ways you can redirect your attention. For example, rather than trying to ignore the crowd, focus on having fun with what you are doing! If you’re having fun, you can lose yourself in the dance and forget that the audience is even there. This may seem far off from where you are currently, but it is achievable! Truly dancing for yourself means that you can take the thoughts of others and brush them right off of your shimmying shoulders!
Tips To Feeling Fierce And Fabulous
- Make a list of your strengths and accomplishments. No matter how small they may seem, you can celebrate every challenge you’ve overcome to arrive where you are today. Don’t downplay any of your accomplishments. They are even more incredible than you realize.
- Set goals for yourself that you can realistically complete and get them done! You will feel amazing when you accomplish each one.
- Turn to others for help if you feel like your lack of confidence could be a serious issue in certain aspects of your life. Your friends and family are always there to remind you of your worth as the incredible person that you are. Sometimes therapy is the way to go in certain situations, so talk with your family if you think that route may be the right choice for you. Fake It Till You Make It
If nothing seems to be working and you’re about to go onstage feeling debilitated with nerves, one old trick can always help you through: fake it ‘till you make it. This phrase has become something of a cliché, but there is some truth to it. Even if you’re worried your dance won’t be incredible, try dancing like you know it is. If you keep dancing like you feel you’re on top of the world, eventually your mind will follow. Chances are, the people watching won’t even notice your nerves if you dance like they’re not even there. With some work, after time you won’t have to fake it anymore, you will have made it!
Be Kind To Yourself
Every dancer has a journey that they take to arrive where they are. Always remember to be kind to yourself in moments of struggle. Your worst critic is most likely yourself. So keep on dancing and try your best to be carefree while doing it. Eventually, your mind will catch up and realize the incredible talent that your body has. Keep shining bright, and one day you will know for sure that you are a superstar!
