Finding the Perfect Song for Your Solo
May 9th, 2018 by Richie Kormos
As a dancer, the opportunity to choreograph and perform your own solo is an exciting chance to flex your creative muscles. How often do you get the chance to show something that’s entirely your own creation? Maybe you’re working on a piece to perform live, for a video audition, or simply to post on your social media. Regardless of the reason, having the chance to choreograph yourself is an amazing opportunity! But the first step is not always easy. With an endless number of songs to choose from, how do you make sure you’re choosing the song that’s perfect for you? When you have the wheel, it’s up to you to make sure you choose a song that you can relate to and that showcases your best work. In case you need it, here’s a checklist of things you may want to consider when choosing a solo song.
That Familiar, Catchy Tune!
Is there a song you love that has been playing in your head for days, weeks, or even months? If the answer is yes, then that infectious tune may be a good place to start when on the lookout for a solo song. To start, you are probably already very familiar with this song, so giving each moment a little flourish of movement could come naturally to you! The song you find yourself singing in the shower or humming to yourself when walking down the street already has some kind of personal connection to you at this time in your life, so consider taking the chance to express that connection through dance!
An Emotional Connection
Ask yourself, what songs speak to you on an emotional level? Dance is all about passion, so choosing a song you’re passionate about will make it all the more perfect for you! Consider if there are any songs that speak to your soul and already make you want to get up and move. There’s a reason that song has moved you to want to dance. Look to any songs that you associate with a deeply moving time in your life. When it comes to choosing a song that’s right for you, following your heart is always a good start.
Does it Work for Your Choreography?
Now for the technical side of things: when choosing a song, you have to keep in mind what kind of choreography you want to create. For example, if your specialty is tap, maybe you want to look for something that has an extra bit of rhythm in it. However, you don’t always have to play by the rules in this respect. If you think the two work well together, why not try to choreograph a hip-hop piece to an opera song. The genre of the song does not always have to follow the genre of the dance. If you choose an unexpected pairing, you may get some extra props for creativity! You want to showcase yourself at your best, so just make sure you choose a song that you can bring your absolute best dancing to.
Being a Visual Listener!
When listening to music, try to picture some imaginative choreography to go along with it. In other words, be a visual listener! The next time you’re taking a walk or at the gym listening to your usual tunes, try your best to visualize a dance to go along with them. This could be a great way to find some unexpected inspiration! This is your opportunity to have a fun, productive time while doing what you usually do!
Finding New Music
If you’re still having a hard time finding that perfect song, it may be time to look into some new music. Think about the vibe you want for your solo and search for that online. On many different music apps, people create playlists associated with certain moods. You can also turn to the online world to look at some other choreography. This is a useful way to learn about some musical artists you may not be familiar with whose work is perfect for dance. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your dance friends! They could have some music in mind that is the perfect match for your upcoming solo.
When you’ve found that perfect song for your solo, you’ll know it’s the right fit. You should feel comfortable and one hundred percent yourself when choreographing. Your best self will come out with the right choice of song! Good luck choosing that golden song. When in doubt, remember to follow your heart!
