#ScholarshipOfTheWeek: Juilliard Summer Intensive
May 24th, 2018 by Richie Kormos
Every performer dreams of attending school at Juilliard in New York City. The almost guaranteed success in the performance world makes their program one of the most competitive programs in not just the United States but the World. To help out prospective students, Juilliard is offering a Summer Dance Intensive to sculpt young dancers. And get them ready for when they actually audition for college, allowing them to put their best foot forward. This week’s Scholarship is the Juilliard Summer Intensive.
The Summer Dance Intensive is a three-week program that focuses on classical ballet and modern dance for “advanced students who are dedicated, disciplined, and dance with a generosity of spirit”. To qualify you have to completed at least one year of high school/secondary school. But will not have graduated before the program begins. Most dancers are between ages 15-17, including international students! The program allows for dancers to get a chance to experience The Juilliard School program. As well as have the opportunity to live on-campus for the summer!
When attending the Summer Dance Intensive, a typical day begins with technique class, pointe or a men’s class. Following that would be classical partnering or modern, as well as an additional ballet class for women who are not on pointe. After lunch is served, dancers are able to take two additional classes that vary, they include classes such as; yoga, music, improvisation, modern and workshops. On the final day there is a performance.
Only 44 students are accepted into this competitive program, and to apply you can send in a video or participate in a live audition. Once accepted, students are able to apply for scholarship awards that will cover part of the tuition for the intensive.
Applications for the 2018 intensive are closed, however the 2019 application will be available on September 1, 2018 and can be found online at: https://www.juilliard.edu/dance/summer-dance-intensive. Break a leg!
