Dance is not only a way to express ourselves, it’s also a way to study our culture. That is the thought behind the donation-based dance classes at the Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance in Brooklyn. They have launched a series of dance classes where the community can come and learn the dance and spiritual cultures of Haiti, Cuba, and parts of West Africa. Jimena Martinez, the co-founder and executive director of the program, said “At Cumbe, we want the entire community, and especially those of African descent, to reclaim these dance traditions.” By making the dance classes donation-based, more people can come and enjoy the culture of the dance classes without having to worry about money. To make the classes even more exciting, there will be live drumming to “bring out the very heart of the dance culture.” Their use of dance to bridge the gap between the community and their culture is why Cumbe makes the perfect #SQMomentOfTheWeek .
