As we keep celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, today’s #FridayFeature recognize an Asian American dancer and choreographer who is bringing a modern twist to her Indian heritage! Meet Brinda Guha. Brinda is a New York based artist and innovator! She learned Indian Classical dance from a young age, and has a strong connection with Flamenco dance. She studied Classical Indian dance most of her life, and has continued to grow her dance training with multiple contemporary fusion styles. . In 2005, while at college at NYU, Brinda developed a project called “RISE” based on the works of Maya Angelou. This project went on to be presented in 5 Indian cities, as well as London, England. From here, she started teaching and choreographing at Kalamandir of NJ Dance School, and started the Kalamandir Dance Company. . Not only is Brinda developing a potential new genre (Contemporary Indian Dance which is currently under review), but she is also a philanthropist and activist. In 2017, Brinda started Wise Fruit NYC, an artistic showcase dedicated to the feminine divine. These events bring together dancers, choreographers, singers, and other interdisciplinary artists in NYC to yield action. "Between live installments, Wise Fruit NYC functions as a community space and online campaign that services the field with beginner tools and resources in social justice and anti-racism initiatives. “ . Not only is she making an impact on the dance community now, she is showing that we are not finished growing. That you can learn and adapt diffrent styles and traditions to create beautiful art that crosses genres and cultures. Learning from each other can go beyond technique and styles. Brinda is a great reminder to all that dance is also, at its core, about people. .
