Wellness Insight : Play for Joy
Not every creative moment needs to lead to a performance. Sometimes the most important thing you can do as a dancer is play. Joyful movement, curiosity, and trying things “just because” help keep your relationship with dance healthy.
Research with teens shows that improvisation and playful, open-ended activities can strengthen divergent thinking, including originality and flexibility. That matters for dancers because it supports creative choices, musicality, and confidence in the moment, without the pressure to be perfect.
Try building a few minutes of play into your routine this week. Improv to a song you love, make up a new pathway across the floor, or create movement without worrying if it’s “good.” Play reminds you why you started, and it helps your creativity stay alive.
