At Artists Unite Collective, we believe confidence in the arts is not built by applause alone. It grows through encouragement that helps young performers recognize their effort, progress, and personal experience.
After a recital, show, or performance, many adults instinctively say “Good job.” But the words children hear in these moments shape how they see their abilities, their growth, and their value as artists. Our latest blog post, “What Kids Really Need to Hear After a Performance,” explores how thoughtful, meaningful feedback can support deeper, more lasting confidence.
Drawing from research in psychology and arts education, this post explains why effort-focused feedback matters, how certain types of praise can unintentionally create pressure, and why focusing on growth and experience helps children build resilience and self-belief.
We also share simple, supportive ways adults can respond after a performance, from acknowledging hard work and emotions to encouraging reflection and framing challenges as part of the learning process. When feedback centers on growth rather than outcomes, young artists develop confidence that stays with them long after the applause ends.
